In Siddha Medicine PCOS(PCOD) -Polycystic ovary syndrome comes under the category of கெர்ப்ப ரோகம் ( diseases which prevent pregnancy)
PCOS is characterized by fluid-filled sac-like structures in the ovary and is termed as Sinaipaineerkattti. The clinical features of PCOS have already been described in the Siddha literature such as “YUGI MUNI VAITHIYA KAAVIYAM” AND “THIRUMOOLAR KARUKIDAI VAITHIYAM” etc. Siddhar Thiruvalluvar also called as Thiruvalluva Nayanaar in his Siddha Medical Monograph
“Gnanvettiyaan-1500” has discussed female reproductive problems like Infertility, PCOS and Fibroids, etc. in detail. The following verses from the above literature explain the clinical features of PCOS,
In the Siddha system, the treatment is by adopting internal and external medicine, food, a healthy lifestyle, yoga, and asanas. PCOS may be due to deranged vatham and kabam with dietary changes and lifestyle modification. According to Panchaboodham and Mukkutram theory bitter and astringent taste influences vatham and neutralizes pitham, kabam. Hence plants that are bitter and astringent taste may be administered for the treatment of PCOS as it is the pathology of Kabavatham. PCOS may be termed as Sinaipaineerkatti, Soothagavaayu, Susigaavaayu.
Infertility evaluation begins after recording the complete history of the patients. A complete physical examination of both man and wife is advised. Urine test, Nadi pariksha (pulse examination), menstrual fluid test, details about menstrual cycle (which can point out to problems such as PCOS), and severe dysmenorrhoea (suggesting endometriosis or genital infection), pelvic surgeries, etc., help the doctors reach a diagnosis.
According to the individuals’ body constitution, a detoxifying program is adopted to eliminate the accumulated toxins. The aim of this treatment is to transport toxic substances that are clogged in different parts of the body to places where it can be easily expelled via natural body opening. A preliminary detoxifying therapy helps the patients improve their metabolic activity of the liver and get rid of a few causative factors.
When Kapha dosha impairs, the body tends to put on weight and results in obesity, which turns out to be a causative factor for PCOS. Similarly when Vata dosha goes out of balance in the yoni (ovary), results in PCOS called as one of yoni vatam. So, detoxifying therapy is a good pre-treatment procedure for balancing all the doshas, to their appropriate levels.
This therapy also includes special diets and measures that support a healthy lifestyle and helps in preventing the accumulation of abdominal fat, which is one of the reasons for infertility.
Siddha Medicines to treat PCOS:
Both Internal and External Siddha Medicines are employed in treating polycystic ovarian disorder (PCOS/PCOD).

FOODS TO FOLLOW
high-fiber vegetables, such as broccoli
lean protein, such as fish
anti-inflammatory foods and spices, such as turmeric and tomatoes

Great options for high-fiber foods include:
cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts
greens, including red leaf lettuce and arugula
green and red peppers
winter squash
Lean protein sources like tofu, chicken, and fish don’t provide fiber but are very filling and a healthy dietary option for women with PCOS.
Foods that help reduce inflammation may also be beneficial. They include:
tomatoes
almonds and walnuts
fruits, such as blueberries and strawberries
fatty fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and sardines
Which foods should I limit or avoid? Foods to avoid
foods high in refined carbohydrates, such as white bread and muffins
sugary snacks and drinks
inflammatory foods, such as processed and red meatsRefined carbohydrates cause inflammation, exacerbate insulin resistance and should be avoided or limited significantly
These include highly-processed foods, such as:
white bread
muffins
breakfast pastries
sugary desserts
anything made with white flour
Pasta noodles that list semolina, durum flour, or durum wheat flour as their first ingredient are high in carbohydrates and low in fiber. These should be removed from your diet.
Pasta made from bean or lentil flour instead of wheat flour is an excellent alternative.
Sugar is a carbohydrate and should be avoided wherever possible. When reading food labels, be sure to look for sugar’s various names. These include:
sucrose
high fructose corn syrup
dextrose
Sugar can also lurk in the things you drink, such as soda and juice.
It’s a good idea to reduce or remove inflammation-causing foods, such as fries, margarine, and red or processed meats from your diet as well.
Other lifestyle changes to consider
PCOS, like many disorders, responds positively to proactive lifestyle choices.
This includes exercise and daily physical movement. Both can help to reduce insulin resistance, especially when coupled with a limited intake of unhealthy carbohydrates.
Many experts agree that at least 150 minutes per week of exercise is ideal.
Daily activity, low sugar intake, and a low-inflammation diet may also lead to weight loss. Women may experience improved ovulation with weight loss, so women who are obese or overweight and want to get pregnant may find physician-approved exercise especially important.
The symptoms associated with PCOS can cause stress. Stress reduction techniques, which help calm the mind and let you connect with your body, can help. These include yoga and meditation.
Speaking with a therapist or other medical professional may also be beneficial.
The bottom line If you’re coping with PCOS or any of its symptoms, you may feel frustrated at times. Taking proactive steps regarding your health can improve your mood as well as reduce your symptoms.
